Avior I
( 16" L x 13” W x 14" H)
This StarSentient® glass sculpture, Avior I, is named after a highest luminosity, orange giant in the central part of the southern constellation of Carina, near Canopus. Avior is among the brightest stars in the sky, even brighter comparatively than the North Star, supergiant, Polaris, at 1.5 times its diameter. By comparison, Avior is 70-80 times the diameter of The Sun.
Avior lies some 605 light years from our Solar System and is a binary star with at least two other stars moving as a system, another orange giant that a blue dwarf. These eclipse one another, causing periodic shifts in perceived brightness viewed by our telescopes. Its location has meant that it was not historically visible to northern astronomers and did not gain its proper name until the 1930s, when it was selected as a navigational star for use by Her Majesty’s Nautical Almanac Office for the Royal Air Force’s Almanac. The intended meaning of the name is unclear, but given the RAF, it’s presumed to be connect to the Latin avis = 'bird', also used in modern times for 'aircraft'.
However, I felt very guided to this name and discovered with further effort, Avior is a boy’s name in Hebrew that means variously, “My father is light.” “Bearer of of light from the father.” And also may be construed, “Light of my father.” The literal linguistic breakdown into a poetic phrase is even more beautiful, as in, “A soul carrying inherited illumination.” So this all is very apropos for the energy of a brilliant star even as this one in my Avior series remains distinctly androgynous (as do all my other Aviors).
It is the first of my Avior series. It’s top is a lyrical, etched crystal glass and vintage Russian-engineered, fiber-optic sphere with asterism. The central disk is a rare, green color for glass, equivalent to the famed Celadon ceramic glazes begun in ancient China and Korea. Avior I has the sense and feel of this ancient color, especially on the top which has been sandblasted and sealed. Underlying the disk has uranium glass marbles with very strong activation yielding a brilliant yellow-green when directly exposed to UV light. These together all ad to the transformational quality of the sculpture and energetic congruence with the meaning of spiritual light in its name.
