Capella
(13”L x 13”W x 28.5”H )
Most of my StarSentient® glass sculptures hang from the ceiling, but was the first one to also sit on a tabletop. I have modeled this into a mytho-poetic moment in glass that forms a stable entity made up of five elements. StarSentient® CAPELLA echoes the light of its star namesake, Capella, whose appearance is distinctly golden amber. In its sense of bringing down the golden light of the star, a paradox occurs as both its molten, red-hot condition at the time of formation now become a cooled, frozen reflection of its past, just as the light of this star (all stars) has cooled eons by the time it arrives to our eyes as an artifact of its creation.
Capella, the star, is actually a yellow-orange giant type binary, so it is very visible in the winter sky because it is a massive light source. It is a dual star composed of a pair (Aa-Ab), each of similar type, color, and luminosity, intensified from our viewpoint by the effect of the compounded stacked pair. Yet, these two are separated by vast distances of space. Capella is the third-brightest star of the northern celestial hemisphere after Arcturus and Vega. Capella’s combined color appearance is distinctly golden amber. The primary star (Aa) is 12 times the size of The Sun and sits approximately 43 light years from Earth making it “very close.”
The name means “little goat” in Latin, and lives in the constellation Auriga, The Charioteer. The man driving the chariot is traditionally depicted holding a mother goat with the whole depiction referring to Zeus and the she-goat that nursed him as an infant in the Classical Greek mythology.
