Erakis
( 17.5" L x 13” W x 18.5" H)
My StarSentients™ sculpture, Erakis, is named after the star of the same name meaning, “The Dancer.” This Arabic name was given to it by the Czech astronomer, Antonín Becvar, in his Star Catalogue (1951). More commonly, it is known as Herschel’s Garnet Star, after the founder of modern observational astronomy, Sir William Herschel. It is a variable, red, hypergiant that usually appears intensely, garnet red and sits at the tip of the Elephant Trunk Nebula near the constellation Cepheus. It’s one of the deepest-colored stars visible to the naked eye, about 900-1,250 times bigger than our Sun and distant by over 2,000 light-years. If it were located where the Sun is, it would extend past Jupiter. For Erakis to be so bright (over 269,000 times brighter than our star) and as visible as it is at that distance, this star is one of the most massive in the Milky Way Galaxy. Since 1943, the spectrum of this star has served as a spectral standard by which stars are classified.
I was absolutely guided from Erakis’ beginning to create it with a definitive, uprising sense of dance and motion spiraling from the tail to the top. This was before I ever knew the meaning of its name! The gem-like, red glass elements used are a first for me in incorporating them with an aquatic green, main disk. Further counterpoint is achieved with the lowest element, the tail, sandblasted and etched, while all the upper elements retain their original, glossy as made, finishes.
