Merope
( 19" L x 9.5” W x 14" H)
My StarSentient® sculpture, Merope, is named after a star in the Pleiades open star cluster, located in the constellation Taurus. The Pleiades is among the closest to Earth at about 440 light-years and has been known since antiquity, holding important meaning for many cultures under different names. It is a sub-giant, indicating it is a huge, hot, blue-white star with 4.8 times the Solar radius of The Sun. Merope appears enveloped in a visible nebulosity that it illuminates, the Merope Nebulousity (NGC1435) making it one of the most photographically dramatic stars in the Pleiades cluster.
The name, Merope, originates from Greek mythology, where Merope (Μερόπη) is one of “The Seven Sisters”, Pleiade daughters of the Titan, Atlas and the Oceanid, Pleione. In the Hellenistic Period of Ancient Greece, Aratus, in his Phaenomena (270 BC), depicted each Pleiade in the heavens individually, including Merope, thereby bringing mythology and the star names together formally.
Merope the StarSentient® sculpture features the rich teal blue of the main disk, complemented by golden copper flake “clouds” within the underside and a brilliant Mediterranean sky blue of spiraled, spread tendrils extending from beneath it. The crown at the top is a deep, golden, spiraled form that mirrors the tendrils below, melding with the whole in a sense of stability and contrapuntal movement.
