The StarSentient® sculpture, Mintaka, is named after the westernmost star in the Orion Constellation’s “Belt,” one of the most visually recognizable stars in the night sky. It is located approximately 1,200 light-years from Earth. Rather than being a single star, Mintaka is an extraordinarily complex, multiple-star system composed of at least five, and possibly six, gravitationally bound stars that revolve around one another. Their orbital motions can range from days to centuries for the most distant star.

This is a dominant star, a massive, blue supergiant radiating intense blue-white light characteristic of extremely hot, young stars. Its age is estimated at 5-7 million years, compared to the Sun's 4.6 billion years. The combined luminosity of the Mintaka system is estimated at roughly 250,000 times that of the Sun, or over 13 times larger, making it one of the most brilliant stellar systems visible to the naked eye. Mintaka is especially significant because it lies almost exactly on the celestial equator, allowing it to be seen from nearly every inhabited region on Earth, unlike many other bright stars. The system is relatively young, likely only a few million years old, and formed within the vast Orion OB1 stellar association, a gigantic star-forming complex rich in nebulae, hotter young stars, and interstellar gas clouds. No confirmed exoplanets have yet been detected orbiting Mintaka. Nearby notable stars include the other two supergiants of Orion’s Belt, Alnilam (middle) and Alnitak (the other end), each substantially larger and more luminous still than Mintaka,

The name “Mintaka” comes from the Arabic mantaqa, meaning “belt,” so referring directly to its place in Orion. The sculpture reflects the multi-star system configuration of Mintaka with six elements, the most I have composed in any piece thus far, and the most in any of my standing sculptures.
