Helios

The StarSentient™ glass sculpture, Helios, (from the ancient Greek) is the very first of my sculptures created in assembled art glass. It is the proof of concept. I made it along with several others almost 25 years ago. It was the lead in to my early calling to build these pieces. I utilized a two-part, over the counter epoxy to bond it’s elements together, but subsequently increased the quality of the epoxy to a very slow-setting, premium optical-grade one specifically made for optical glass in all of the ones made thereafter. The sculpture captures and amplifies deep orange light, evoking our Sun’s vibrant, life-giving brilliance and constant radiance. The blend of smooth, glossy surfaces with the sense of movement are iconic for all the work that has followed. It also distinctly represents a form that appears to be from somewhere “far-away” or a future made familiar from science fiction.
