Sirius

(22.5”L x 13”W x 23”H)

StarSentient® glass sculpture, SIRIUS, embodies a dynamic evoking an aquatic nature energetic. Named from the ancient Greek word for scorching or glowing, “serios,Sirius’s luminosity and brilliance as a star holds a profound, important history for many world cultures, most particularly for the Dogon tribe of Mali, west Africa. They believe that their ancestral, spiritual progenitors were amphibious, twinned, androgynous beings called the Nummo, who came to teach them from a planet in orbit around a dwarf star. That star, Sirius B, is not viewable from the Earth unless using very strong magnification. This star is now known to be of a pair coupled with the massive Sirius A, making it a binary system (A circling B every 50 years). That this tribal people knew of the existence of this star, undiscovered by modern science until 1928, remains a marvel still to be scientifically explained, that is unless one accepts their sacred myth story of astral knowledge said to come from the Nummo. In the Dogon ethos, these are said to have come to the Earth in a spacecraft over 5,000 years ago. There are numerous other features of our own solar system that the Dogon people know about and attribute to the teachings of the Nummo.

The importance of this star is found in many other historical cultures and in some cases, the legends have similarities to the Dogon’s mythology. In the night sky, we see only Sirius A with naked eye and standard telescopes and call it Sirius. Sirius A is a main sequence younger blue-white star 200-300 million years old that is 1.7 times as large as our Sun. The two stars are about 8.6 light years away, making them amongst the very closest of our celestial neighbors situated in the Canis Major constellation. Canis means dog in Latin thus the famous appellation for Sirius,”The Dog Star.”

In StarSentient® SIRIUS, an oceanic siphonophorae sentiment has again come through. It is crafted from three tiers of thick blue, aquamarine and deep, green-blue, solid glass with as made gloss finish.
